Since fall 2021, Ludwig has co-hosted series two of Platemark, a podcast series on the history of Western prints and printmaking. Starting with Albrecht Dürer, the series is continuing with episodes that take deep dives into such eminent artists as Rembrandt van Rijn, Titian, Jacques Callot, and Hendrick Goltzius.

Platemark’s History of Prints series harkens back to a class on the same topic that Ludwig taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) some 18 times. It was a special class that included multiple field trips to area collections and was based largely in the Baltimore Museum of Art’s print study room, which enabled the students to look at, up close and personal, hundreds and hundreds of prints.

Tru and Ann Shafer

That course is being taught in a different manner now and translating Ludwig’s remarkable talks and teaching to a podcast is the brainchild of co-host Ann Shafer. It is she who believes recording all that material is important and that no one engages bored and sleepy art students while conveying deep insight and information about the history of our shared visual culture like Ludwig. It is the creators’ belief that these lectures can easily stand in for college curricula in schools where such a course is not feasible.

It is ongoing and select episodes are embedded here. All of them are available at www.platemarkpodcast.com.
